John Adams high school senior Monica Caponigro is our Michiana High School Student of the Month for December.

Redeemer Radio’s Student of the month, presented by St. Joseph Health System, recognizes students who excel in the classroom, show a strong Catholic faith, and are involved in extracurricular activities at school or in the community.

Monica is the student body President at Adams and is heavily involved in other extra curriculars at the school, including mock trial, show choir, National Honor Society, IB Film and Cross Country. Outside of school, she’s an accomplished ice skater and now serves as a coach for kids. She’s also performed hundreds of hours of community service, including at the Robinson Community Learning Center in South Bend.

“Monica always puts others first,” Adams Principal Jim Seitz said in his nomination of Caponigro. “I’m amazed at how she is able to care for others, participate in so many activities and still maintain a 4.265 GPA. Monica truly represents Adams High School, St. Joseph Grade School and her faith in everything she does.”

Monica is a parishioner at St. Joseph Parish in South Bend. There she has served as an altar server, cantor, and Eucharistic Minister.

“My faith has brought more of a sense of love into my life,” Monica explains. “Mother Theresa has this saying, ‘do little acts of kindness with great love.’ I Love that. Mother Theresa is my confirmation saint and I just think that’s really beautiful.”

When told Monica was being nominated for the Student of the Month, St. Joe Pastor Fr. Kevin Russeau, C.SC., remarked, “this is wonderful! I can certainly testify to her faith. She is outstanding.”

Monica attended St. Joseph Grade School from 1st to 8th grade and then transitioned to Adams. She said getting an elementary Catholic education was wonderful and now she’s enjoying her time at a public high school.

“I think the beauty of John Adams is that there is such a diverse population of students not only in our ethnicity but in their religions,” Caponigro explained. “I think it’s really beautiful to share our religions because it helps us to understand one and other on a greater level and it’s not just what is your personality but where are you coming from.”

Be sure to check out our interview with Monica from our morning show, the Daily Refill.

The Student of the Month interview airs between 7:30-8am on the 1st Wednesday of each month. To nominate a Student of the Month, go to and fill out the form.
