South Bend Clay High School senior Miriam Horban is our Michiana High School Student of the Month for February, 2021.
Redeemer Radio’s Student of the month, presented by St. Joseph Health System, recognizes students who excel in the classroom, show a strong Catholic faith, and are involved in extracurricular activities at school or in the community.
Miriam comes from a large Catholic family that attends Corpus Christi Parish. She’s is the 5th of 7 kids.
“It’s been great,” Miriam explains about having such a big family. “You always have someone there for you, especially with your faith, you have people who share that faith with you, and you get to discuss it and share that with them.”
She says her faith has grown in the last year during the pandemic because of her family’s decision to pray the Rosary each night together.
“It allows me and my other family members to wind down, collect the intentions we have from the day, and we kind of get to think of all of those things and pray for those,” Miriam explains.
The Horban family is known for filling up a pew at Church to themselves each Sunday morning. Miriam and her siblings also attended grade school at Corpus.
“It was a really great experience,” Miriam says of attending Corpus Christi Grade School. “I got to build my foundation for my faith. That was a great thing outside of my family that taught me about everything that I could build that foundation on.”
Now she’s a senior at Clay High School, where she’s a peer tutor, a member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA above 4.0. She says she’s enjoyed going to a public high school after a Catholic grade school.
“You meet different people,” she explains. “That got me to see other perspectives and other things and I got to share that faith with others that haven’t really known it before.”
She says going to public high school has also allowed her to grow in her faith in a different way. Now she is the one that must initiate things.
“Obviously, you don’t have daily prayer and you don’t learn about Church and your faith throughout the day,” says says. “Once I got to Clay, I realized I had to take action and take charge of my faith and be the leader of that and make decisions to push my faith in the right direction.”
Outside of school and church, Miriam is a member of 4-H, where she shows rabbits.
Miriam thanks her family, Fr. Daryl and all her teachers for their support over the years. She says she’s looking at the dental hygiene program at Ivy Tech following high school graduation because she’s passionate about healthcare and helping others.
